OCTOBER - HOCKEY EQUIPMENT AWARDED TO KAY TAY WHEE SCHOOL

Submitted by Principal, Stephen Boss

The students of Kaw Tay Whee School were honored this past month when the school was chosen to receive two complete sets of floor hockey equipment from Sport North and the Edmonton Oilers organization.

Rob Meckling, of Sport North, contacted the school in early October to inform the students that they had been chosen by Sport North and the Oiler organization to receive the equipment.

During an afternoon presentation, a school assembly was held. Several students had an opportunity to hold the equipment for the first time. We even had a puck drop and a shot or two was taken.

Special thanks go to Rob Meckling of Sport North for organizing the event. Students will appreciate having the new equipment for our physical education program.

SEPTEMBER 19 - TRADITIONAL FISH CAMP EXPERIENCE

Submitted by David Radcliffe, YK1 Dene Kede Facilitator

On Sept. 19th,  École William McDonald Middle School (WMS) and Range Lake North (RLN) students together with teachers traveled by boat on Great Slave Lake to visit a traditional fish camp. The fifteen visitors stayed with Modeste and Therese Sangris for the next three days where they participated in a number of outdoor activities.

The students set up their own camp, set out a fish net, hunted for moose and made dry meat. When they checked the net, students were pleased with the results of their efforts – a bountiful catch! Students learned how prepared their fish in the traditional manner with help from one of the elders.

The weather held out for the entire trip adding to an over all positive and exciting learning experience for all participants.

Many thanks to RLN teacher David Speakman and WMS teacher Tabitha Kelly for all their help during the trip.

Bugz was an overwhelming success with all 500 tickets being snapped up almost immediately. The cast of 90 students performed to a full audience on May 22nd and 23rd. Phone calls and comments keep coming in about just how amazing this production turned out to be. Well done everyone!

MAY 24, 2007 - ÉCOLE SIR JOHN FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC CONCERTS

Submitted by Principal, Mieke Cameron

Congratulations to Bill Gilday and his incredible Music students for their tremendous performances two nights in a row! Once again, it attracted many to our school for an evening of joyful music!

One parent said it so well in her letter of congratulations... Thank you so much for an evening of pure, joyous, spirited entertainment! We loved every minute from the selection and variety of pieces - energetic and subtle, complex and dynamic, to the highlighting of individual musicians and vocalists. A superb showcase of the exceptional talent, year-long hard work, and dedication to excellence on everyone's part. The outcome is reliably TOP NOTCH!!!

I couldn't agree more. Job well done to our Sir John musicians and their musical Director!

May 2, 2007 - 1st Annual RLN Middle School Film Festival "Golden Rockies"

Close to 100 film-goers filled the seats of the Capitol Theatre for the first annual city-wide middle school film festival organized by Range Lake North Technology Teacher, Rod Kennedy and SJF media Studies teacher, Arnold Krause.

The festival featured student films from both Range Lake North and Weledeh schools. Next year, organizer Rod Kennedy hopes to see participation from middle school students across the city. Of the 57 films enjoyed throughout the evening, 23 films were judged while 25 from earlier years provided additional entertainment.

Festival judges included SJF's Arnold Krause, CKLB's Bob Ellison and CBC's Mark Solnoky who generously volunteered their time and expertise. And,
… the winners were: Anti-Racism/Smoking - Don't be Racist by Range Lake North students Alexandra Heine & Carly Wilson;Critic's Choice - Tally-ho KABOOM! by Weledeh student Paula Klassen;Audience Choice - Lupigirls by a group of Weledeh students: Natalie Westman, Anne-Lise St. Louis, Kelsey Lafond, and Susan Rohac.

April 26, 2007 - 4th Annual École Sir John Franklin High School Film Fest

A full house of film-goers enjoyed 1 hour and 45 minutes of SJF student-created movies during the 4th Annual SJF High School Film Fest held at the Capitol Theatre. Throughout the evening, the audience viewed twenty-seven of the thirty-three videos produced by SJF's Akaitcho Trades and Technical Centre (ATTC) grades 9 to 12 media studies students.

For the past 4 years, ATTC media studies teachers Arnold Krause and Alan Petten, together with eager students, have organized the film festival. Once again, PIDO Productions generously provided all the necessary audio gear for the evening. This year, student organizers decided to forego the judging process and simply enjoy the creative talents of all film-makers!

Tickets for the SJF Film Fest sell for $5 and are usually sold out within the first couple of lunch hours. Sales proceeds are used to fund SJF Media Scholarships.
