French Immersion
Yellowknife Education District No. 1 has over 30 years of experience with successful French Immersion programming. These programs are open to all students from Grades 1 to 12, including those from non-French speaking backgrounds.

YK1 offers Immersion programs at three separate schools:

Designed to help students develop a functional level of bilingualism, YK1 program options include:

  • Early Immersion - Now delivered in a K-5 single-track French Immersion Learning Environment* École J.H. Sissons
    ~ Bilingual Pre-Kindergarten (User-pay)
  • ~ Entry points: Kindergarten - Grade 1
    ~ All subjects taught in French; 100% of instruction is in French (K-2)
    ~ English Language Arts instruction begins in Grade 3

    ~ Each year the Early Immersion program  will add another grade level.
  • Intensive French (Grade 6 Option): Range Lake North School This unique program immerses students in French and is ideal for those interested in developing communication skills in a second language.
    ~  Open to all Grade 6 students
    ~  No previous exposure to French language is required
    ~  Students immersed (70%) in French language for the first 5 months 
        (Math instruction remains in English)
    ~  The second 5 months, instruction is in English and  supplemented with
        20% "Enhanced French' programming
  • Enhanced French (Grades 7 & 8 Option) Range Lake North School
    ~  Open to students who successfully complete Grade 6 Intensive French   and Grade 7 Enhanced French
    ~  Continue to develop French language communication skills
    ~  Provides a French Language course and one subject in French

    ~  Up to 180 hours per year of French programming

  • Intake options vary* for current Early and Middle French Immersion students transferring from other schools and include:
    ~  Early Immersion: Kindergarten - Grade 5
    ~  Middle Immersion: Grades 6 - 12

Core French
An integral part of the curriculum, Core French is taught as a separate subject within the regular English program and:

  • Offers students, whose first language is not French, the opportunity to acquire basic French language communication skills by the end of Grade 12
  • Provides continuity from Grade 1 - 12 (40-125 hours per year; 2-5 times per week, depending on grade level)
  • Familiarizes students with French language and culture
  • High school Core French is offered as an optional subject using the NWT multi-dimensional curriculum (a thematic, project-based, communicative-experiential approach)

 

 

Canadian Parents for French

CPF is a national network of volunteers which values French as an integral part of Canada and which is dedicated to the promotion and creation of French second language learning opportunities for young Canadians.

Canadian Parents for French  has several active NWT chapters. Check them out for membership opportunities, Board positions and French resources designed specifically for non-French-speaking parents.

CPF operates through chapters in local communities, branches at the provincial/territorial level, and a national association, all governed by a volunteer Board of Directors.
