YK1 sends letter to Jane Groenewegen, Chairperson of the GNWT Priorities and Planning Committee, thanking her and her committee members for their frank questions and comments put forth to Cabinet on Board Reform during the February 18th Question Period, and for the motion put forth on behalf of the committee.
In its letter, YK1 assures the committee that the Board of Trustees is open to discussion about ways of improving education for students while at the same time building upon the effectiveness and efficiency of the organizational structures that support the delivery of quality education.

YK1 together with the Northwest Territories Teachers’ Association (NWTTA) and many parents, teachers, and community members stand in opposition to the lack of consultation undertaken by Government of the Northwest Territories with its Board Reform initiative.
At 3:15 pm, over 300 supporters gather at the Legislative Assembly to show their frustration with the current Board Reform process.

meet with the GNWT Minister of Education, Culture and Employment,
Jackson Lafferty for an update on Board Reform. YK1 now hopeful
this meeting will lead to discussions with Ministers Lafferty and Miltenberger
in the near future.

YK1 receives letter from the Honourable Jackson Lafferty, Minister of Education summarizing the Education Leadership Council Meetings held December 2008 where the Minister confirms consultation will begin in January 2009.

YK1 sends letter to GNWT Department of Executive Assistant Deputy Minister, Executive Operations, copying all other NWT Superintendents, requesting all reports the GNWT is using to make decision on proposed Board Reform. To date (January 19, 2009) no response has been received from this request.

YK1 Board Chairperson, Duff Spence attended the semi-annual meeting of the Education Leadership Council/NWT Superintendents Association on December 10th and 11th.
Board Reform discussions were held on day-2 with the Honourable J. Michael Miltenberger. Meeting participants learned that at this time there is no new information available and that a consultation schedule will be provided in January 2009. YK1 was advised that answers to the questions put forth on November 6, 2008 will be provided by the end of March 2009.
YK1 remains concerned about the negative impact the board reform may have on student success.
