In its efforts to address the proposed GNWT Board Reform, YK1’s fundamental goal is to ensure that the success of Yellowknife students is not compromised as a result of this GNWT initiative.

Timeline of Events

February 19, 2009

YK1 sends letter to Jane Groenewegen, Chairperson of the GNWT Priorities and Planning Committee, thanking her and her committee members for their frank questions and comments put forth to Cabinet on Board Reform during the February 18th Question Period, and  for the motion put forth on behalf of the committee.

In its letter, YK1 assures the committee that the Board of Trustees is open to discussion about ways of improving education for students while at the same time building upon the effectiveness and efficiency of the organizational structures that support the delivery of quality education.

February 18, 2009

YK1 together with the Northwest Territories Teachers’ Association (NWTTA) and many parents, teachers, and community members stand in opposition to the lack of consultation undertaken by Government of the Northwest Territories with its Board Reform initiative.

At 3:15 pm, over 300 supporters gather at the Legislative Assembly to show their frustration with the current Board Reform process.

February 13, 2009

YK1 Board Chairperson Duff Spence and Assistant Superintendent Mel Pardy
meet with the GNWT Minister of Education, Culture and Employment,
Jackson Lafferty for an update on Board Reform. YK1 now hopeful
this meeting will lead to discussions with Ministers Lafferty and Miltenberger
in the near future.

January 30, 2009

YK1 receives letter from the Honourable J. Michael Miltenberger, Lead Minister,
Refocusing Government Strategic Initiative Committee which includes the information package received in the January 29 update (below).

January 29, 2009

YK1 receives three documents from the Government of the Northwest Territories: Backgrounder on Regional Services Boards; Overview of Regional Service Board Approach; and Board Reform Qs and As.

January 19, 2009

YK1 receives letter from the Honourable Jackson Lafferty, Minister of Education summarizing the Education Leadership Council Meetings held December 2008 where the Minister confirms consultation will begin in January 2009.

January 6, 2009

YK1 sends letter to GNWT Department of Executive Assistant Deputy Minister, Executive Operations, copying all other NWT Superintendents, requesting all reports the GNWT is using to make decision on proposed Board Reform.  To date (January 19, 2009) no response has been received from this request.

December 19, 2008

Minister Michael Miltenberger issues a News Release titled "Minister Outlines Next Steps in the Board Reform Initiative".

December 16, 2008

YK1 receives letter from Wendy Bisaro, MLA Frame Lake in response to our November 6, 2008 letter to all Yellowknife MLAs advising her position on the proposed GNWT Board Reform issue

December 11, 2008

YK1 Board Chairperson, Duff Spence attended the semi-annual meeting of the Education Leadership Council/NWT Superintendents Association on December 10th and 11th.

Board Reform discussions were held on day-2 with the Honourable J. Michael Miltenberger. Meeting participants learned that at this time there is no new information available and that a consultation schedule will be provided in January 2009. YK1 was advised that answers to the questions put forth on November 6, 2008 will be provided by the end of March 2009.

YK1 remains concerned about the negative impact the board reform may have on student success.

November 28, 2008

YK1 receives letter from Sandy Lee, MLA Range Lake in response to our November 6, 2008 letter to all Yellowknife MLAs advising that the Honourable J. Michael Miltenberger will be responding to our correspondence directly.

YK1 and YCS meet with Yellowknife MLAs to discuss questions put forth by both school boards and to identify common goals in regard to the proposed GNWT Board Reform

YK1 sends letter addressed to each Yellowknife MLA in an attempt to get answers about proposed GNWT Board Reform as announced by Minister Miltenberger

Three Yellowknife school boards (Yellowknife Education District No. 1 (YK1); Yellowknife Public Denominational District Education Authority (YCS); and Commission scolaire francophone de division) meet in response to November 3rd announcement by GNWT Finance Minister, Michael Miltenberger
