Yellowknife Education District No. 1 Board of Trustees approved a motion at the Regular Board Meeting on February 11, 2014 to undertake a community engagement process in order to confirm the board decision to continue to own and operate all YK1 Schools.


The Board of Trustees of Yellowknife Education District No. 1, in response to the GNWT’s proposal to transfer a school to the GNWT, and in order for the Board to confirm its decision to continue to own and operate all District schools I move that the Board immediately undertake a targeted community engagement process concerning strategic facility directions that best meets the needs of YK1 students and stakeholders.

This is in response to the GNWT proposal to transfer a school to the GNWT.  YK1 believes a decision of this magnitude must be made at a public meeting following community engagement and in the best interests of YK1 students and programs. 

The Board of Trustees of YK1 are a public decision-making body and no decision has been made regarding facilities.  A working group will be formed and a community engagement process will be undertaken to hear from all stakeholders and gather feedback on the issue.

The community engagement process will assist us in meeting our responsibility to manage resources entrusted to us to best meet our students’ needs and to make a long-term plan for YK1 facilities.
