École Įtł’ǫ̀ Readiness Update: June 24, 2022

Yellowknife Education District No. 1 (YK1) and the GNWT’s Department of Education, Culture, and Employment (ECE) will provide regular updates on the construction of École Įtłʼǫ̀ leading up to its opening in August 2022. The project remains on budget and on schedule, meaning students will be able to attend the brand-new school for the start of the 2022-2023 school year! The first day of school is August 29, 2022.

All École J.H. Sissons students who were in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 4 for 2021-2022 are automatically enrolled for École Įtłʼǫ̀ next year (unless their families have already told us otherwise). If you are a family with a student in Junior Kindergarten, Kindergarten or Grade 1 and want your child to attend the French Immersion program, you can still register by downloading and completing the registration form located on the school district's main website. Please send your completed forms to You can also use the form to register if your child is entering Grades 2 to 5 and is transferring to École Įtłʼǫ̀ from another French Immersion.

In this week’s update, we are highlighting our school's music facilities. Our school and community values its connections to the arts, and seeks to help students develop academically and creatively. A music program with a well-designed, and well-equipped learning space is part of the solution to running a good fine arts program. We are also lucky to have keen students and teachers who are enthusiastic about the arts.

Our music room also transforms into a stage for school events, including live performances! The three pictures included below show:

  • The stage as would be seen from the gym floor (for rehearsals and live performances);
  • The music room when it is closed off for use as a learning space;
  • Our new, flexible-use choral risers.

Thank you for your interest in our school, we look forward to welcoming our students and families into our school in August. In the meantime, if you have questions, please email them to Answers may be a little slower in coming over the summer break, but we will get back to you as soon as we can.
