Teaching and Learning: January 10-21, 2022

YK1

While there will be variations in what remote learning looks like for students, the information below provides a general description of what students and parents can expect in all YK1 schools. The lessons we have learned from our previous experiences have better positioned teachers to provide effective remote learning opportunities for students until we return to in-person learning. Online learning may include individual, small group and/or whole class formats.

Junior Kindergarten - Kindergarten

For students in Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten, the focus for learning in their language of instruction will be on providing families with ideas that support hands-on, experiential learning through play based activities. Teachers will provide suggested activities and helpful tips to assist parents in supporting this kind of learning. In addition, teachers will have daily online meetings with students and their families to support learning.

Grades 1-2

For students in Grades 1-2, the primary focus in their language of instruction will be on literacy and numeracy and Dene Kede. Students can expect to be online approximately one hour daily. This will consist of daily meetings with their teacher and short lessons that focus on essential literacy and numeracy skills. Teachers will provide additional activities and ideas for parents to support their child(ren)’s continued growth in these key areas. Other areas of focus are encouraged and would include physical and mental wellness, community, science, art etc.

Grades 3-5

For students in this age range, the focus of learning in their language of instruction will be on Mathematics, Language Arts, Dene Kede, Social Studies and Science. Students will have the opportunity to engage in instruction and support from their teacher that focuses on targeted learning outcomes. Students can expect 1-2 hours of learning per day (synchronous and asynchronous). Being mindful of developmentally appropriate approaches to remote learning, students will be provided with additional activities outside of the online environment that support their learning.

Grades 6-8

For students in Grades 6-8, the priority for learning in their language of instruction will be the core subject areas of Mathematics, Language Arts, Dene Kede, Social Studies and Science. Students will have the opportunity for daily support and instruction from their teacher and lessons that focus on the learning outcomes/topics. Students can expect 2-3 hours of learning (synchronous and asynchronous) per day with additional activities to be done independently to support ongoing learning.

Grades 9-12

Students in Grades 9-12 will be moving to full-time online learning each morning with small group and individual work sessions in the afternoon. The goal for remote learning for this age category is to minimize disruption as students complete their semesters. Finishing courses will include a final assessment period from January 19-26, 2022. Semester 2 begins on Friday, January 28, 2022.
