École Įtł’ǫ̀ Project Update: May 13, 2022
Yellowknife Education District No. 1 (YK1) and the GNWT’s Department of Education, Culture, and Employment (ECE) will provide regular updates on the construction of École Įtłʼǫ̀ leading up to its opening in August 2022. The project remains on budget and on schedule, meaning students will be able to attend the brand-new school for the start of the 2022-2023 school year! The first day of school is August 29, 2022. In this week’s update, we are highlighting our school’s new library located at the heart of the school.
The school and contractor have made sure that artwork from Jon Rombough will be reinstalled on the interior east wall of the library. These beautiful panels were originally displayed on the exterior of JH Sissons, and we are happy to have them featured so prominently in École Įtł’ǫ̀.
The inside of the library is also coming along nicely. Below you can see a picture of the work in progress on the circular reading area on the second floor. It’s coming together really nicely along with the seating area below it (which is located behind the scaffolding in the picture). We have also included a sketch to give you a better idea of what the area will look like when completed.
Opposite to the seating area is the main desk, pictured below. In looking at these you can start to get a sense of how open and light the space will be. The drawing below the picture gives an idea of the finished space. There is also a variety of furniture on order that is both comfortable and allows for flexible seating arrangements. This will allow students to read and learn while placing themselves comfortably around the learning space.
Students, staff and parents are really looking forward to the opening of École Įtł’ǫ̀ in late August. In the meantime, we hope you are enjoying our sneak peeks into the school’s interior.
