École Įtłʼǫ̀ Project Update: April 29, 2022

Classroom

Yellowknife Education District No. 1 (YK1) and the GNWT’s Department of Education, Culture, and Employment (ECE) will provide regular updates on the construction of École Įtłʼǫ̀ leading up to its opening in August 2022 (hear a pronunciation of the school name here). The project remains on budget and on schedule, meaning students will be able to attend the brand new school for the start of the 2022-2023 school year! The first day of school is August 29, 2022.

New School Features

The two-storey, 4,359 m2 facility is being built on the former site of École J.H. Sissons. It is the first school to be built in Yellowknife in 20 years. Once complete, the school will feature 18 classrooms, current technology, ergonomic furniture, and a centrally-located library. An Indigenous consultant also provided insight into the design of the building, which resulted in incorporated elements such as circular spaces, wayfinding, and colour selections.

Classroom Highlights:

  • Student coat closets so students can keep personal belongings in the classroom with them
  • Dedicated quiet corners for students
  • Plenty of natural light
  • New interactive white boards with a camera, pen/eraser and 4K resolution
  • Student chairs and desks in various heights and shapes
  • Organic waste management system

Non-Instructional Day: June 20, 2022

To help with the impending move to the new school, June 20, 2022 has been designated a non-instructional day for staff and students of École J.H. Sissons and École William McDonald Middle School. This means there will be no school for students of both schools on this day.
