Core French
Core French is offered at all Yellowknife Education District No. 1 (YK1) schools with English track programming, Grades 1-12
An integral part of the curriculum, Core French is taught as a separate subject within the regular English program and:
- Offers students, whose first language is not French, the opportunity to acquire basic French language communication skills by the end of Grade 12
- Provides continuity from Grade 1-12 (40-125 hours per year; 2-5 times per week, depending on grade level)
- Familiarizes students with French language and culture
- High school Core French is offered as an optional subject using the NWT multi-dimensional curriculum (a thematic, project-based, communicative-experiential approach)
