Home Schooling
Introduction
The rules on how to home school your child are established under the Education Act, the Home School Regulations, and the Home School Directive (1996).
Yellowknife Education District No. 1 (YK1) has developed administrative procedures for home school programs for families registering for them in YK1 schools. The District has also developed a number of resource documents to guide parents through the process of registering their children for home schooling, planning for the learning program, assessing their children's progress, and periodically reviewing that progress with the school's principal. Parents who are interseted in schooling their children at home are encouraged to read through the following documents.
- Administrative Procedure 270 - Home Schooling
- Parent's Guide to Home Schooling in YK1
- Home School Registration Form (Word) (Fillable PDF Form)
- Home School Annual Record (Word) (Fillable PDF Form)
- Guide to Course Challenge for Secondary Credits
- Reimbursement Form for Home School Expenses (Fillable PDF Form)
- List of allowable Home School expenses
- Focused Education Resources in BC evaluates curriculum resources. Items found within their searchable database are eligible for reimbursement.
- Note: The maximum amount reimbursed is $1,500/registered child in total for the 2026-2027 School Year
Registration
Parents must register their children with a school in order to be considered a home schooling family. For the 2026-2027 school year, all registrations must be sent to the District's Main office. Please identify the school of choice on the registration form, and we will forward it to that school on your behalf. Registration can be submitted by email (info@yk1.nt.ca) or by dropping off in person at the District Office. The office is located at:
5402 Willideh Avenue (50th Avenue)
Yellowknife, NT.
Please note that the District Office is closed to the public from July 20th, 2026, through to August 3rd (inclusive).
Registrations must be accompanied by the Home School Annual Record in addition to the other required documents, and be submitted no later than September 15th of the school year. Once received, your registration information will be forwarded to the school you indicate on the registration form.
Additional Resources
Home school programs must follow the established curriculum for the Northwest Territories. The Territories' curriculum very closely mirrors that of British Columbia. The links below are intended to help families familiarize themselves with the curriculum to help them prepare for the program they will offer their children at home:
- Northwest Territories Curriculum (Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12)
- British Columbia Curriculum (Kindergarten through Grade 12)
